S&P 500 Price Rebounds After AI-Led Slide: What It Means for SP500 Traders
Key Takeaways
- The S&P 500 closed at 7,580.07 on 30 October 2026 after a 1.82% one-day drop, and finished October 0.94% lower.
- The equal-weighted S&P 500 beat the standard index by 5.85 percentage points in October, its widest monthly margin since April 2009.
- As of 10:06 (GMT+8) on 2 November 2026, the Vantage SP500 Contract for Difference (CFD) traded at 7,622.25, below both its hourly 50-period and 200-period moving averages.
The S&P 500 fell 1.82% to 7,580.07 on Friday 30 October, its worst session since June, while the average stock in the index lost less than half as much.1,2 Treasury yields fell the same day, usually a friendly backdrop for shares.1 As of 10:06 (GMT+8) on 2 November 2026, the Vantage SP500 CFD traded at 7,622.25.
S&P 500 futures were about 0.50% higher early on Monday, and Brent crude slipped 2.99% to $110.04 a barrel, Benzinga reported.3,4 The cash index now sits about 3.05% below its record close of 7,818.93 from 6 October.5 The index had a bad Friday; its average member had something closer to an ordinary one.
That difference matters for anyone with SP500 CFD exposure. The CFD tracks the market-value-weighted index, where a small group of artificial intelligence (AI) heavyweights can outweigh hundreds of smaller members, so the headline price and the broad market do not always move together.
That gap is what this piece unpacks: why AI earnings pulled the headline index down far harder than the stocks inside it, and what it changes about the risk picture into Apple’s results, the US midterm elections, and Friday’s payrolls report.
Big Tech Results Set Friday’s Tone
Friday’s damage was concentrated in technology. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.86% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average 1.09%, and the S&P 500 posted its third straight weekly decline.6 Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) dropped almost 29%, its worst day since 1974, and Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) results added to doubts about how much companies are spending on AI, the Associated Press (AP) reported.1
Intel’s filing shows why the reaction was so sharp. Third-quarter revenue rose 21% to $16.5B, but fourth-quarter guidance of $15.0B to $16.0B puts the midpoint about 6.06% below the quarter just reported.7 In plain terms: a company that had just grown told investors to expect a smaller quarter next, and the share price adjusted within one session.
Interest rates were not the trigger. The Federal Reserve held the federal funds rate in a 3.75% to 4.00% range on 28 October by a 10-2 vote, with two members preferring a 0.25 percentage point increase and the statement noting that inflation “remains elevated”.8 By Friday, Treasury yields were falling as investors looked for safer assets, and the 10-year yield sat near 4.93% early on Monday.1,4
A softer bond market usually supports equity valuations. This time it coincided with the index’s worst day since June, which points the explanation away from rates and towards earnings.
That explains the headline loss. It does not explain why most of the index barely moved with it.
The Average Stock Told Another Story
The split started before Friday. On Thursday 29 October, more than 400 S&P 500 members rose and the equal-weighted index gained 1.21%, while the standard index slipped about 0.30% as Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) posted its largest one-day fall on record, TheStreet reported.9 Vantage has not independently verified the component count.
S&P 500 index fund prices showed the same pattern on Friday. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY), which follows the standard index, fell 1.77%, while the Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (NYSEARCA:RSP), which gives every member the same weight, lost 0.79%.2,4
A market-value-weighted index behaves like a seesaw where the heaviest passengers decide which way it tips. Technology made up nearly 40% of the standard S&P 500 in mid-October, against about 16% of the equal-weighted version, according to CNBC.10
Over the whole month, the gap widened to its largest in more than 17 years. The standard S&P 500 fell 0.94% in October, while the equal-weighted index beat it by 5.85 percentage points, the widest monthly margin since April 2009, by Bespoke Investment Group’s count.6,11
In October, the S&P 500 fell 0.94% while its equal-weighted version beat it by 5.85 percentage points, the widest monthly margin since April 2009.
For an SP500 CFD position, this is the variable that headline coverage tends to skip. The contract follows the weighted index, so Friday’s move leaned heavily on a short list of AI names, even in a month when the typical member gained. Someone reading broad market headlines and someone holding SP500 CFD exposure were, in effect, looking at two different Octobers.
Concentration explains the shape of Friday’s fall. The hourly chart shows how much of it Monday’s bounce has recovered.
What the S&P 500 Chart Shows

On the Vantage SP500 CFD hourly chart, price spent most of the 28 October session above both its 50-period and 200-period moving averages, with a brief spike to near 7,790 late that day (New York time). It gave that ground back over the next two sessions and reached a low near 7,533 on 30 October, before recovering into the close.
Momentum swung further than price. The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the TradingView setup used for this analysis dropped below 20 near Friday’s low, then recovered to 45.95 by the cut-off, still under its 50 midline. Its own moving average read 33.65, a line that was still catching up with Monday’s bounce.
Price rose about 89 points from Friday’s low to 7,622.25, back to the 7,615 to 7,625 area where the 23 and 26 October sessions found their lows. It did so beneath both averages: the 50-period moving average stood at 7,675.66 and the 200-period at 7,694.23, after the faster line moved below the slower one during the 30 October session.
In short, price has recovered about a third of the ground it lost between the 28 October spike and Friday’s low, while both hourly averages still sit above it, as of 10:06 (GMT+8) on 2 November 2026.

Those levels now meet a crowded US calendar, and most of it lands outside Asia’s trading day.
Apple, Midterms, and Payrolls Ahead
Several scheduled releases fall inside the next five sessions. All times below are GMT+8; the US moved to winter time on 1 November, so the cash open is now 22:30 (GMT+8). The full schedule is on the Vantage economic calendar.
- Apple and Palantir Results, Tuesday 3 November: Both report after Monday’s US close. Apple’s results are due around 05:30, with the call at 06:00, the first under chief executive John Ternus.4,12 On a GMT+8 clock, that means the numbers arrive before breakfast.
- US Midterm Elections, Tuesday 3 November: Voting takes place on Tuesday in the US, so results arrive during the Asia session on Wednesday 4 November.3
- Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), Tuesday 3 November, 23:00: September job openings.2
- ADP Employment Report, Wednesday 4 November, 21:15: Private payrolls for October.2
- US Nonfarm Payrolls, Friday 6 November, 21:30: The October jobs report.2
- Federal Reserve Decision, Thursday 10 December, 03:00: The next scheduled Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decision, dated 9 December in Washington.13
How to read Apple’s numbers through this lens: the index-level reaction depends on the largest members, so the useful check is whether AI-linked heavyweights keep falling while the equal-weighted index holds up. That combination would match the pattern of 29 and 30 October.
What would change the read: the concentration story holds while the equal-weighted index outperforms on down days, as it did on Thursday and Friday.2,9 It weakens if the equal-weighted index starts falling as fast as the standard one, which would point to broad declines rather than a rotation within the market.
A few practical questions sit underneath all of this.
S&P 500 Questions Traders Ask
What is the S&P 500 ticker?
The cash index is commonly quoted as SPX or ^GSPC, and S&P 500 futures on CME Group trade under the ES symbol.4 Vantage lists its CFD on the index as SP500.
How is the S&P 500 performing year to date?
The index closed Friday 30 October up 734.57 points for 2026, a gain of about 10.73% by the writer’s arithmetic on AP’s figures, even after a 0.94% fall in October.6,14
Can anyone predict where the S&P 500 goes tomorrow?
No forecast is reliable enough to state, and this piece does not offer one. What is known is the timing: futures trade through the Asia session, Apple’s results land around 05:30 (GMT+8) on Tuesday, and payrolls follow on Friday at 21:30 (GMT+8).2,12
SP500 CFD Risk Into a Busy Week
Friday’s puzzle was a 1.82% fall in an index whose average member lost less than half that. As of the cut-off, the answer looks like concentration rather than a broad retreat: AI-heavy names carried the index lower, and Monday’s bounce has so far stopped below both hourly averages. The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) closed Friday at 19.42, up 12.91%.4
A Stop Loss closes a position at a level set in advance and limits losses to a planned size, but it does not guarantee that level. With Apple’s results due around 05:30 (GMT+8) on Tuesday and midterm results arriving through Wednesday’s Asia session, prices can gap between hourly bars, and a stop can be filled at a worse level than the one set.
Leverage is double-edged: it magnifies potential losses as much as potential returns. At 1:20, a 1% index move equals 20% of the margin committed. Sizing each position as a proportion of account equity is one way traders hold the effect of a single gap within a planned range during a week of volatility like this one.
