Google Stock Price Falls 12%: Capex Tops Cash Flow and What It Means for GOOG CFD Traders
Quick answer: why did Google stock fall?
Google stock fell 12.29% on 29 October 2026 after Alphabet reported third-quarter results. Cloud revenue rose 103%, but capex of $51.36 billion topped operating cash flow, leaving free cash flow negative, Search growth slowed to 12%, and management expects capex to increase significantly in 2027.
- Ticker and class: GOOG (Class C), $282.32 close on 29 October
- Premarket, 30 October: $280.86 at 17:24 (GMT+8)
- Q3 revenue: $127.58 billion, up 25%
- Google Cloud: $30.71 billion, up 103%
- Capex and free cash flow: $51.36 billion and negative $9.07 billion
- Next report: Fourth quarter, expected 2 February 2027
Google stock fell 12.29% on 29 October 2026, a day CNBC called Alphabet’s worst ever, in the same week Google Cloud revenue doubled.1,2 Here is the puzzle this Google stock analysis sets out to solve: how does a business growing that fast lose roughly $500 billion in market value in a single session?1
As of 17:24 (GMT+8) on 30 October 2026, the Google stock premarket quote on TradingView was $280.86 for GOOG, the Class C shares, 0.52% below the $282.32 close.3 Alphabet has two listed Google stocks, GOOGL and GOOG. This piece walks through what the Alphabet earnings report showed, what the chart says, and the dates ahead. That quote is the Google stock price today in one line. Vantage lists Alphabet in its US share CFD range, and its stock CFDs guide explains how those contracts work. Trading leveraged products carries a high risk of losing money rapidly.
Cloud doubled, but the stock fell
Start with what went right. Revenue rose 25% to $127.58 billion and operating income rose 30% to $40.58 billion. Google Cloud revenue reached $30.71 billion against $15.16 billion a year earlier, and by our calculation its operating margin climbed to 36.2% from 23.7%.4 Revenue landed slightly under analyst consensus of about $128 billion, according to LSEG data.5,2
The Google earnings headline was ugly: earnings per share (EPS) of $2.12, down 26% from $2.87.4,3 Accounting explains part of it. An $8.66 billion loss on equity securities cut EPS by $0.55, and Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi said other income was negative $8.2 billion, due primarily to an unrealised loss on Alphabet’s SpaceX investment.4,6 Add the $0.55 back and EPS is $2.67, which still trails the roughly $3.02 analysts expected.5,2
The market marked down the cash
So where did the rest go? Straight to the cash line. Alphabet spent $51.36 billion on capital expenditure (capex) in the quarter, more than double the $23.95 billion of a year earlier, while operating cash flow slipped to $42.29 billion from $48.41 billion. Free cash flow, operating cash flow minus capex, came to negative $9.07 billion.47,5
Think of Cloud as the engine and capex as the fuel bill. The engine runs at twice last year’s speed, but the fuel bill outgrew the cash coming in.
Operating income rose $9.35 billion in a year; free cash flow moved $33.53 billion the opposite way.
Alphabet kept its 2026 capex range at $195 billion to $205 billion on the call.6 With $131.95 billion spent over nine months, that implies $63 billion to $73 billion in the fourth quarter, on our arithmetic.4 For 2027, Ashkenazi said Alphabet continues to expect capex to increase significantly. On supply constraints she added: “We expect margin headwinds in the near term as we utilize this capacity.”6
The market appears to have marked down not what Alphabet earned but the cash it takes to keep earning it. None of this is new: Alphabet shares closed 7.13% lower on 23 July, after the capex range went up.7 Vantage’s 27 October look at the slide and its big tech earnings preview flagged capex as the line to watch.
Search grew, but paid less
Google Search and other revenue rose 12% to $63.35 billion, down from about 17% in the second quarter.4,2 Andrew Boone at Citizens cut Alphabet to Market Perform from Market Outperform on 29 October. “Google has significant execution risk ahead as it transitions search monetization,” Boone wrote.8
Not every analyst read the day as a warning for the whole market. Ross Mayfield, an investment strategy analyst at Baird, told Reuters that small caps outperforming was a sign that the market’s reading of cracks in the AI story “doesn’t mean cracks in every corner of the market”.9 Rate worries ran alongside it, and Vantage’s S&P 500 note and 30 October gold note cover how far the move spread and where Fed hike bets stood.
What the Google stock chart shows

The Google stock chart tells the story in three acts. GOOG stock traded roughly between $332 and $355 from 1 to 14 October, then slid to a low near $314 on 26 October. The third act is the gap: from a $321.89 close on 28 October (the level implied by the reported percentage moves) to a first hourly bar on 29 October with a high near $295, with no regular-hours trade between those levels on this chart. The last hourly bar closed at $282.16, a few cents from the $282.32 Investing.com quote, which looks like a feed difference.2
Both moving averages now sit above price. The 50-period line is at $315.69 and the 200-period line at $336.10 according to the chart legend, so $282.16 is 10.62% below the first and 16.05% below the second. The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) read 20.39 against a 34.97 signal line on the TradingView setup used for this analysis. An RSI this low describes how fast price moved, not where the move ends.
| Level | Reference | What it marks |
| 200-period average | 336.10 | Slower moving average on the hourly chart |
| 28 October close | 321.89 | Last close before the results gap |
| 50-period average | 315.69 | Faster moving average on the hourly chart |
| 29 October hourly high | Near 295 | Read from the chart, so approximate |
| Last hourly close | 282.16 | Final bar on the chart |
| Premarket quote | 280.86 | TradingView, 17:24 (GMT+8) on 30 October |
| Last bar low | 280.17 | Low of the final hourly bar |

The GOOGL chart looks near identical: the Class A shares closed at $283.82, down 12.64%, so the GOOGL price sits slightly above the GOOG quote.5 Vantage’s Nasdaq news page tracks how the wider index responded.
Analysts disagree on the spending
A Google stock forecast built on Wall Street estimates starts from a lower base this week. Investing.com reported that several firms trimmed their price expectations after the report while most kept their ratings, and Citizens cut its rating.2,8 Treat any Google stock prediction, GOOGL stock forecast or Alphabet stock forecast from a bank as an estimate. Investing.com listed fourth-quarter consensus at $3.36 EPS on $142.44 billion of revenue, with results expected on 2 February 2027.2
On the earnings call, JPMorgan’s Doug Anmuth asked about Search ad load and Goldman Sachs’ Eric Sheridan about compute priorities.6,10 For the longer view, Vantage’s Alphabet stock outlook guide covers earnings history and risks, and its Google stock news page collects each update.
Dates traders are watching
For anyone tracking Google stock today, these are scheduled events, not signals. The Google share price and Alphabet stock price on both classes move again when the US cash session opens, so the premarket quote is a starting point only.
- 30 October, 21:30 (GMT+8): US cash session opens, the first live test of Amazon’s results (Vantage’s Amazon Q3 earnings preview).9
- 3 and 6 November: US midterm elections, then US payrolls.9
- 7 and 14 December: Record and payment dates for Alphabet’s $0.22 per share dividend.4
- 2 February 2027, expected: Fourth-quarter results, with 2027 capex details due.2,6
Four lines carry the next report: 2027 capex against operating cash flow, Search growth against 12%, Cloud margin against 36.2%, and free cash flow against negative $9.07 billion. The cash-not-earnings read weakens only if free cash flow turns positive while capex rises.
A Stop Loss can help limit a loss to a planned size, but it does not guarantee an exit at a set price. On 29 October an order placed between $321.89 and $295 could only have been filled after the gap, at a worse price than the one set. Earnings dates are where gap risk lives, including for share CFDs held overnight.
Leverage works in both directions and raises the margin needed to hold a position. As an illustration only, a position sized so that a $10 move equals 1% of account equity would lose about 2.7% on a $27 gap, whatever the leverage used.
