Why Brent Crude and WTI Fell as US-Iran Talks Eased Supply Fears – UKOUSD and USOUSD Analysis
Key Takeaways
- Brent crude oil futures settled 7.63% lower at $104.77 a barrel on 2 November 2026; in futures, WTI crude oil settled 7.36% lower at $96.46. 1
- At 10:11 (GMT+8) on 3 November, the Brent crude price today on the Vantage UKOUSD feed was $108.21, and the WTI crude oil price today on Vantage USOUSD was $96.72.
- Both sat within about $0.25 of their 4H 200-period moving averages.
The Brent crude oil price fell 7.63% on 2 November 2026 to $104.77 a barrel, oil’s biggest one-day slide since July. 1,2 The barrels behind it had barely changed: most Gulf OPEC+ producers were still pumping below their required levels. 3 Talk moved the market. The tankers had not caught up.
As of 10:11 (GMT+8) on 3 November 2026, the Brent price today on Vantage Brent crude (UKOUSD) was $108.21, up 0.03%, and the WTI price today (USOUSD) was $96.72, down 0.06%. Brent futures have a 52-week range of $58.66 to $120.88. 4
Why did the crude oil price drop this hard when supply had not improved, and why did the Brent curve keep pricing scarcity? Figures are fixed at the cut-off, so Brent crude oil price live and WTI crude oil price live quotes may differ.
Why Did Brent and WTI Fall?
Brent and WTI fell more than 7% on 2 November 2026 after Iran signalled openness to US talks through Qatari mediators, easing fears of further Hormuz disruption. Brent futures settled at $104.77 and WTI futures at $96.46, though Gulf supply stayed below OPEC+ required levels.

US-Iran Talks Drove the Drop, Not Tankers
October set the stage. Brent gained about 13.6% and WTI about 15.2% over the month, 5 and expiring December Brent settled near $118 on 30 October, its highest since April, as traders braced for escalation after the US midterms. 6
Over the weekend, Qatari mediators met Iranian officials, then travelled to Tehran on Monday evening to meet Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. 7 Iran‘s president said the supreme leader had given the government more authority to negotiate, and President Donald Trump hinted at progress. 2
What did not change was supply. Seven core OPEC+ members kept December output quotas unchanged on 1 November. 3 Raymond James analyst Pavel Molchanov said scepticism was warranted after many “false dawns” in recent months, 7 a pattern our review of the May US-Iran deal slide traces.
Early on 3 November, Reuters, citing the Wall Street Journal, reported a US strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island, and Brent futures rose 0.5% to $105.25. 8 Vantage has not verified that report.
Talks explain the size of the drop. They don’t explain why both charts stopped on the same line.
The Brent Crude Oil Price Chart Meets Its 200-Period Line

The Brent crude oil price chart on the Vantage UKOUSD 4-hour (4H) view ran from about $101.45 on 6 October to about $118.75 on 30 October, then slid to about $107.20 on 2 November. At $108.21, the Brent crude oil price today sat right on its 200-period moving average (MA) at $108.22, its first touch of that line since 1 October.
WTI took a bumpier road to the same spot. The WTI oil price fell from about $105.60 to about $95.70, and at $96.72 the current WTI crude oil price sat just under its 200-period MA at $96.97, a line it only reclaimed in mid-October.

Momentum shows how hard the fall was. The 14-period RSI on the TradingView setup used for this analysis read 25.73 for Brent and 29.47 for WTI, both under 30 and the lowest on either chart since 1 October. An oversold reading measures speed, not destination; the next candle never gets the memo.
On a 4H chart, the two look like twins. The futures curve tells a different story.
Brent Crude Oil Futures Still Price Scarcity
Here’s the part we found most telling. On 30 October, expiring December Brent futures settled near $118 6 while the January Brent oil price settled at $113.43: 5 about $4.50 extra for oil delivered a month sooner. That shape is backwardation, which the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) describes as a barrel now being worth more than a barrel later. 9 A $4.50 premium for a one-month head start is an expensive spot in the queue.
The gap survived Monday’s drop. Vantage UKOUSD is a spot Brent price, as our Brent vs WTI guide explains, and it showed $108.21 at 10:11 (GMT+8), roughly $3 above January Brent futures at $105.25 an hour earlier. 8 WTI crude oil prices showed almost no gap: $96.72 on Vantage USOUSD against $96.93 for December WTI crude oil futures, still the front month. 8
That reshapes Brent vs WTI. On Monday’s settlements, Brent stood about $8.31 above WTI; 1 on Vantage spot prices at the cut-off, the gap was about $11.49. Same oil, different delivery dates.
Oil for January delivery fell 7.63% on Monday. Spot Brent on the Vantage feed still sat about $3 above it.
So where do analysts land?
Brent Crude Forecast Views: What Analysts Are Saying
Vantage doesn’t publish a Brent crude forecast, but analysts this week named the two forces any oil price forecast has to weigh.
On the tight side, UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo pointed to “record freight costs, constrained tanker capacity, and recovering Chinese imports” as supports for prices. 10
On the loose side, Rystad analyst Jorge Leon said OPEC+ faces “an extremely difficult call for 2027”, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned of excess supply next year if Gulf flows return to normal. 11 OPEC+ sets that framework on 29 November. 6
Any Brent oil forecast or WTI forecast written today rests on a diplomatic outcome no one can date. Our read is narrower: Monday’s drop tested, but did not break, the October trend on the 4H charts. That read weakens if Brent logs a run of 4H closes below its 200-period MA, as WTI already has.
The levels and dates come next.

Brent and WTI FAQs
What Is Brent Crude Oil?
Brent crude oil is the international benchmark, priced from North Sea grades and traded as Brent futures on ICE in London. It prices about two thirds of the world’s crude. 10
What Is WTI Crude Oil?
WTI crude, or West Texas Intermediate, is the US benchmark, traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange for delivery at Cushing, Oklahoma. When people say US crude oil, WTI is usually the price they mean.
Is There a Reliable Oil Price Prediction?
No oil price prediction holds up well when one headline moves the market 7%. A sturdier crude oil forecast input is what futures already price, such as this week’s Brent backwardation.
Monday showed how fast the crude oil price can price a peace path, not that the barrels follow. Until Gulf supply data catches up with the headlines, Brent and WTI are trading on talks first and tankers second.
A headline outside US hours can open Brent or WTI far from the prior close, and a Stop Loss may then fill at a worse price than set. A Stop Loss is designed to limit losses to a planned size; in a gap, the realised loss can be larger. Our risk management hub explains slippage.
Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains. At 1:10, a 7.63% move equals about 76% of the margin posted. Sizing positions by the share of account equity at risk, rather than available margin, frames how much one headline could affect the account balance.
