Why Crude Oil Prices Slipped From Six-Month Highs as Peace Hopes Built – UKOUSD and USOUSD Analysis
Key Takeaways
- Brent crude futures settled 0.78% lower at $115.81 on 26 October, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures fell 1.46% to $101.76. 1
- Brent gained about 6% in the week to 23 October, against about 2.3% for WTI. 1
- As of 09:58 (GMT+8) on 27 October 2026, Brent (UKOUSD) traded about $13.12 above WTI (USOUSD) on the Vantage feed.
Quick Answer: Crude oil prices slipped on 26 October as Middle East peace hopes built, but not evenly. Brent crude futures gave back 0.78% and kept most of a 6% weekly gain, while WTI crude fell 1.46%, leaving Brent roughly $13 above WTI on the Vantage feed.
Brent crude oil rose about 6% in the week to 23 October, while WTI managed about 2.3% on the same headlines, widening Brent’s premium over the US benchmark. 1 As of 09:58 (GMT+8) on 27 October 2026, that wider gap was still in place on the Vantage feed: Brent (UKOUSD) traded near 114.67 and WTI (USOUSD) near 101.55, about $13 a barrel apart.
Monday’s pullback on peace hopes took some heat out of both benchmarks but didn’t close that gap, which is the more useful signal for anyone with oil exposure. This piece unpacks why Brent crude oil prices appear to hold most of the risk premium, and what that changes into a week with a Federal Reserve decision, US inventory data, and an Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies (OPEC+) meeting.
Instrument Snapshot: As of 09:58 (GMT+8) on 27 October 2026, today’s crude oil rate on the Vantage feed showed Brent (UKOUSD) at 114.67, 0.62% below the previous 4-hour close, and WTI (USOUSD) at 101.55, 0.47% lower on the same basis. Crude oil WTI futures have ranged from 54.98 to 117.63 over the past 52 weeks. 2
Brent Kept Most of Its Rally
Brent crude futures dropped more than $2 early on Monday as officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan held talks with Iranian officials in Tehran, then settled just 91 cents lower at $115.81. WTI crude oil futures closed $1.51 lower at $101.76.
Measured against Friday’s settlements, Brent’s 91-cent dip handed back about one-seventh of its weekly gain, while WTI’s $1.51 slide handed back close to two-thirds of its own. On futures, the gap between the two actually widened, from $13.45 at Friday’s settlement to $14.05 on Monday. (Yes, we ran that arithmetic twice.) At 114.67 on the Vantage feed, the Brent oil price today still reflects most of last week’s rally; the WTI oil price doesn’t.
Reuters also flagged that US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) stocks fell to 282.6 million barrels, the lowest since October 1982, according to the Department of Energy.
So the premium stayed in Brent. The reason has less to do with mood and more to do with geography.
Saudi Attacks Keep the Seaborne Premium Alive
This month’s oil news has largely centred on Saudi Arabia. After Saudi Aramco’s headquarters was hit on 13 October, Yemen’s Houthis vowed to keep up attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities, Reuters reported. 3 Earlier, in September, Saudi Arabia shut its East-West Pipeline after drone attacks from Iraq, according to Quartz. 4
Those are risks to seaborne barrels, and attacks on shipping also kept investors wary on Monday. 1 Brent is priced on waterborne crude. In a note reported by Rigzone on 1 October, Standard Chartered’s Emily Ashford said WTI’s discount to Brent had stretched beyond $12, “its widest since early May”. 5 WTI reflects US domestic supply, which appears further from those shipping lanes.
Gallo Partners chief investment officer Michael Alfaro told CNBC that geopolitical uncertainty has added about $20 a barrel to oil prices, and that much higher Brent prices would mean “you’re going to see more demand destruction”. 4 PVM Oil Associates analyst John Evans was wary of reading too much into the pullback: “Corrective processes are notoriously difficult to quantify,” he said. 6
Supply isn’t rushing in either. The seven core OPEC+ members pumped 25 million barrels per day (bpd) in August, roughly 5 million bpd below February levels, 7 and in Singapore on Monday, International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol said he did not expect energy markets to return to pre-conflict levels in 2027. 8
If the premium is about where barrels travel, the charts should show it in the gap. They do.
Momentum Cooled, but the $13 Gap Held

On the 4-hour UKOUSD chart, Brent printed a high near 118 on 23 October and traded at 114.67 at the cut-off, about 3% lower. Price held above both the 50-period moving average (MA) at 111.76 and the 200-period MA at 107.04, with the 50 above the 200 throughout the chart window.

WTI ran a similar script. It peaked near 104.70 on 23 October and sat 3% lower, at 101.55, at the cut-off. Its 50-period MA (99.50) crossed back above the 200-period MA (96.98) around 21 October, after roughly two weeks below it.
Momentum cooled much faster than price. On the TradingView setup used for this analysis, Brent’s 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) read 52.96 against its own average of 62.61, down from above 70 on 23 October. WTI’s read 52.67 against 59.86, down from near 70. RSI tracks speed, not location, which is how both charts cooled off without going anywhere much.
Here’s what caught our eye: momentum faded at a similar pace on both charts, yet the distance between them barely budged. The UKOUSD-USOUSD gap measured about $13.40 at last week’s highs (near 118 against near 104.70) and $13.12 at the cut-off. Our read: Monday’s peace hopes slowed the rally without changing where the market prices the supply risk.
RSI fell on both oil charts at a similar pace, but Brent’s lead of roughly $13 over WTI barely moved.
Here is how the two benchmarks line up side by side.

What to Watch Before Producers Meet on 1 November
Our commodity market news checklist for today’s crude oil prices (GMT+8):
- US Inventory Data, 28 October: The US Energy Information Administration’s weekly report lands at 22:30 (GMT+8); 9 the SPR line is worth a look after that 1982 low.
- Fed Decision, 28 October (US Time): The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets on 27 and 28 October, 10 so the statement arrives in the early hours of 29 October (GMT+8).
- OPEC+ Meeting, 1 November: The seven core OPEC+ producers meet after holding November output steady. 11 It falls on a Sunday, before markets reopen for the week.
- Tehran and Saudi Headlines, Ongoing: Mediation and Saudi attacks moved crude oil prices on Monday; 1 our crude oil news today and oil price news today pages track both.
The read weakens if the gap narrows sharply while Brent holds, which would point to a WTI-side driver such as US inventories.

Headline Risk Cuts Both Ways for Oil Traders
Last week brought a 6% Brent rally; Monday brought a pullback. Brent’s premium over WTI, about $13 on the Vantage feed and $14 on futures, held through both, and as of the cut-off it suggests the market hasn’t yet priced a calmer outlook for seaborne crude.
Sessions like Monday’s, when Brent dropped more than $2 and then recovered over half of it, 1 are where gaps and slippage show up. A Stop Loss is designed to limit losses to a planned size, but in a fast market or after a weekend it may be filled at a worse level than the one set. With OPEC+ meeting on a Sunday, that matters this week.
Oil contracts for difference (CFDs) are traded on margin, and leverage is double-edged: it magnifies losses as well as gains. On a leveraged position, the roughly 3% move in both benchmarks since 23 October can represent a much larger share of account equity. Position size as a percentage of equity, plus the leverage applied, decides how much of an account one headline can reach.
