Why the S&P 500 Held Near Its Record as Treasury Yields Hit a 24-Year High – SP500 Analysis
Key Takeaways
- The S&P 500 closed at 7,801.77 on 7 October, down 0.22%, one session after its first close above 7,800.1
- The US 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.35% on 7 October, its highest level since 2002, hours before Federal Reserve minutes pointed to another rate hike before year-end.3,6
- As of 10:13 (GMT+8) on 8 October 2026, the SP500 price on Vantage stood at 7,809.72, about two points below its 50-period hourly moving average.
The S&P 500 closed at 7,801.77 on Wednesday 7 October, a dip of just 0.22%, on the same day the US 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.35%, its highest level since 2002.1,6 More than two-thirds of US-listed stocks fell that session.3 The index barely flinched.
That split made our desk stop scrolling. For anyone checking the SP500 today, the useful question is who kept the index calm, and what that changes about the risk picture into next week’s US inflation data.
As of 10:13 (GMT+8) on 8 October 2026, the SP500 price on Vantage stood at 7,809.72, little changed on the hour, against a cash-index 52-week range of 6,316.91 to 7,844.52.2
The S&P 500 held near its record on 7 October as a handful of AI-linked companies appeared to absorb pressure from a 10-year Treasury yield at its highest since 2002. The index slipped 0.22% to 7,801.77, even as more than two-thirds of US-listed stocks declined.

SP500 Chart: A Record Close, Then a 1% Dip

On the hourly SP500 chart, price climbed from a low near 7,625 on 1 October to a peak near 7,850 during the US session on 6 October. That was the day the cash index logged its 28th record close of 2026, and its first since 13 August.4
Market strategist Ryan Detrick noted the index had risen on each of October’s first four trading days, and that a fifth straight gain would have been its longest October-opening streak since 2003.9 Wednesday politely declined.
Price then slipped to a low near 7,770 early in the 7 October US session, about 1% below the peak, then recovered to 7,809.72 by our cut-off. The cash index’s range that day ran from 7,763.34 to 7,807.02.2
Momentum told a much louder story than price. The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) in the TradingView setup used for this analysis rose above 80 on 6 October, then dropped below 30 on 7 October. That is a full overbought-to-oversold mood swing for a 1% walk. At the cut-off, the RSI read 51.18, above its signal line at 44.43.
Price also sat almost on top of the 50-period hourly moving average near 7,811.90, while the 200-period average near 7,734.80 kept rising beneath it.
A 1% dip that drags hourly momentum from one extreme to the other needs a driver. The timing points to the bond market.
Treasury Yields Hit a 24-Year High Before the Fed Minutes
The Federal Reserve raised rates at its 15-16 September meeting, and the minutes released on 7 October showed officials expect one more hike before year-end, with no hint of timing between the 28 October and 9 December meetings.3 They confirmed what the market had largely pencilled in, which is about as quiet as a hawkish document gets (more under Federal Reserve News).
The bond market moved first. The 10-year yield reached 5.35% early in the US session, hours before the 14:00 ET minutes, and a solid $39 billion auction later pulled it back to about 5.29%; Peter Boockvar of The Boock Report credited the 24-year-high yields with drawing that demand.6 The SP500 chart appears to line up with that sequence: its 7 October low came early in the US session, near the yield peak, and the recovery took shape later in the day. The wider rates story sits in our Bond Market News.
Energy added weight. Brent crude climbed to about $102 a barrel in early trading on 7 October as Middle East tensions flared and a storm in the Gulf of Mexico threatened supply.3
Before the open, Capital.com senior market analyst Daniela Hathorn said elevated yields kept valuation pressure high, particularly “outside the mega-cap technology names that continue to dominate index performance”.3
That one line is the session in miniature. So how lopsided did it get?
Megacaps Carried the S&P 500 While Most Stocks Fell
The cap-weighted index hid a much weaker session underneath. The Russell 2000 small-cap index fell 1.31% on 7 October, more than two-thirds of US-listed issues finished lower, and in the early afternoon only 170 of the S&P 500’s members were trading higher.3 A day earlier, the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index had closed at its highest level since 23 September.5 Daily breadth updates sit under Stock Market News Today.
Think of cap-weighting as a vote counted by company size. When the biggest members hold steady, the index can sit near a record while most of its members slide.
The earnings calendar may help explain why the giants held up better. FactSet’s 2 October preview put estimated third-quarter earnings growth for the index at 29.5%, up from 26.7% at the end of June.7 TheStreet Pro contributor James DePorre observed that large AI-linked names were being treated as defensive holdings.3
Not everyone reads that as comfortable. Mike Dickson, head of research and quantitative strategies at Horizon Investments, told CNBC that with rates this high, “the margin for error has narrowed as it relates to earnings”, while adding that earnings could still support the market.8
The S&P 500 slipped 0.22% on the day the 10-year yield touched its highest level since 2002, while more than two-thirds of US-listed stocks fell.
For anyone following the SP500 index today, that means the chart levels largely reflect how a few large technology companies trade into earnings season.

What to watch next (times in GMT+8):
- JPMorgan Q3 Results, 13 October: Due at 19:00, an early read on that 29.5% growth estimate.7 Follow the season under Earnings News Today.
- US CPI (September), 14 October: Due at 20:30, directly on the hike question the minutes left open (CPI News).
- US PPI (September), 15 October: Due at 20:30.
- FOMC Decision, 28 October: Statement at 02:00 on 29 October.10
Our read is that a handful of large companies are absorbing yield pressure for the whole index. That read weakens if small caps and the equal-weight index recover alongside the S&P 500, or if the large AI-linked names start falling with everything else.
SP500 Ticker, Index Funds and Live Quotes: Quick Answers
What Is the SP500 Ticker, and Is It the Same as the S&P500 Ticker?
Yahoo Finance lists the cash index as ^GSPC,2 while Vantage lists it as SP500. Same index, several nametags.
How Does an SP500 Index Fund Differ From Trading the SP500 Price?
There is no single S&P500 stock to own. An SP500 index fund such as the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) holds the index’s members; a leveraged contract tracks the price without ownership, and leverage magnifies losses as well as gains.
Where Can I Find an SP500 Index Live Quote?
The cash index trades from 21:30 to 04:00 (GMT+8) during US daylight saving, but the SP500 index quote on Vantage keeps updating outside those hours. That is why the SP500 stock price today read 7,809.72 at our cut-off, not the 7,801.77 close.1 Our S&P 500 trading guide covers the basics.
Gap Risk Into CPI Week
Back to the opening question. The S&P 500 held near its record while the 10-year yield touched its highest level since 2002 as a narrow group of large companies held up better than the rest of the market.3 JPMorgan’s results and September CPI test that balance about a day apart, and our SP500 News page tracks the S&P500 news flow on both.
A Stop Loss can limit losses to a planned size, but it is not guaranteed in fast markets. CPI lands at 20:30 (GMT+8), an hour before the cash open, and a release like that can move the SP500 price past a stop level before it executes; positions held over a weekend or the daily break also carry gap risk. Exposure sized with that gap in mind keeps one data print from deciding an account’s outcome.
Leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and on an index this concentrated, a move in a few large companies passes straight through to a leveraged SP500 position. Sizing as a small percentage of account equity, rather than a fixed number of contracts, keeps risk proportional as volatility shifts.
