Why Gold Held Its CPI Rebound as Fed Hike Bets Faded – XAUUSD Analysis
Key Takeaways
- Gold traded at $4,171.86 on the Vantage XAUUSD feed at 09:41 (GMT+8) on 19 October 2026, above its 50-period and 200-period hourly averages.
- Spot gold fell 1.50% to $4,093.03 on 14 October after hotter US inflation data, then closed the week 0.70% lower at $4,165.40.1,2
- Odds of an October Fed rate hike slipped to around 16% by 16 October, while December odds held near 89%.3
Gold climbed back to $4,171.86 on the Vantage XAUUSD feed as of 09:41 (GMT+8) on 19 October 2026, and the inflation data gave it very little help. September’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.70% year on year against a 3.60% consensus, producer prices jumped 6.30% a day later, and the gold USD price still recovered its entire CPI-day fall.2,4
So anyone checking gold prices today, or the gold price USD live quote over Monday breakfast, is looking at a market that shrugged off two hot inflation prints. This XAUUSD analysis today unpacks where the bid came from and what it changes before the Federal Reserve (Fed) decides on 28 October.
Instrument Snapshot: As of 09:41 (GMT+8) on 19 October 2026, Vantage XAUUSD traded 0.05% below its previous hourly close at $4,171.86. Gold’s record high on the benchmark tracked by Trading Economics is $5,608.35, set in January 2026, leaving today’s price about 25.61% below that peak.5
Hot CPI Sent Gold to a One-Week Low
Spot gold dropped 1.50% to $4,093.03 on 14 October, its lowest since 7 October and a third straight losing session.1 David Meger, director of metals trading at High Ridge Futures, said the data “portends that the Fed is more likely to raise interest rates.” 1
Core CPI, which strips out food and energy, rose 2.60% against 2.50% expected, while gasoline jumped 9.10% in September.4,6
On the gold USD chart, the damage showed up as one long red candle at the 20:30 (GMT+8) release, followed by a low near $4,073 shortly after midnight on the Vantage feed. The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) dropped to roughly 18 on our TradingView setup. Anything below 30 counts as oversold; 18 cleared that bar with room to spare.
Then gold climbed back before most of the macro news that usually gets the credit. The timing is the story.
Why Did Gold Prices Recover So Fast?
Gold regained most of its 14 October CPI drop within hours, trading back above $4,140 in Asia on 15 October. A Treasury rally that day and Fed Chair Warsh’s 16 October remarks, which cut October hike odds to around 16%, coincided with gold holding firm.
Table 1: Gold and Fed Pricing, 14 to 19 October 2026
| Date (2026) | What Happened | Fed Pricing | Gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14 Oct, 20:30 (GMT+8) | September CPI 3.70% vs 3.60% expected | October hike odds about 22% before, 47% shortly after; December about 90% | Spot fell 1.50% to $4,093.03 |
| 15 Oct, Asia session | Rebound from oversold levels | No new data; no reading reported | Vantage feed back above $4,140 by about 08:00 (GMT+8) |
| 15 Oct, US session | PPI 6.30%; Treasury rally | October odds near 28% | Vantage feed held about $4,135 to $4,160 |
| 16 Oct | Warsh speaks in Bangkok | October around 16%; December around 89% | Spot settled $4,165.40, down 0.70% on the week |
| 19 Oct, 09:41 (GMT+8) | Asia open | October odds below 20% | Vantage XAUUSD at $4,171.86 |

The rebound came first, and the Fed chair came later. The Vantage feed bottomed near $4,073 around 00:40 (GMT+8) on 15 October and was back above $4,140 by about 08:00 (GMT+8), during the Asia session. TD Securities saw “CTAs turning large sellers in gold and platinum” after the data, but said offsetting flows had offered strong support, pointing to $4,000 to $4,100 as the region where it expected those flows to stay robust, per FXStreet.9 Vantage has not independently verified those flow estimates.
Thursday tested the rebound. Producer prices posted their largest annual gain since December 2022, yet bonds rallied on worries over corporate borrowing for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, and gold held between roughly $4,135 and $4,160 on the Vantage feed.2 October hike odds still sat near 28% that day.2
Friday added the rate story. Speaking at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Bangkok on 16 October, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh called persistent inflation a shared global challenge, noted the Fed had removed some accommodation in September, and declined to signal its next move.2 José Torres, senior economist at Interactive Brokers, read the tone as “an increasingly patient, gradual approach.” 2 October odds dropped to around 16%; gold settled 0.10% lower at $4,165.40 on the day, then rose in early Asian trade on Monday as traders leaned toward a hold.2,3,8
The US 10-year yield still finished the week near 5.07%.10 For a metal that pays no interest, that’s an opportunity cost that never quite leaves the room. ANZ analysts added a twist for anyone reading the gold news feed: fiscal and debt worries are making high yields look less like strong growth and more like a reason to hold gold, particularly for longer-term XAUUSD investing, as a safe-haven hedge.8
Oil cut the other way. US crude crossed $100 a barrel and Brent touched $109 last week as attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz stepped up amid the Middle East conflict.2,10 Fuel feeds CPI, CPI feeds rate bets, and that loop coincided with gold closing the week 0.70% lower.2
Flows caught the fall; the October hike bet faded later. Does the chart think the threat has passed?
XAUUSD Technical Analysis Today: Momentum Lags

Short answer: not quite. As of 09:41 (GMT+8) on 19 October 2026, the 50-period moving average sat at $4,160.86 and the 200-period at $4,155.14, with the faster line crossing back above the slower one in the latest sessions after slipping under it during the CPI sell-off.
The RSI is less excited: 51.47, just below its 52.46 signal line, with rebound highs since 15 October stalling in the mid-60s versus near 77 on 9 October. At 51.47, the indicator is giving us its finest no comment.
Then there’s $4,200. Price stalled around it on 13 October and again in several attempts between 16 and 19 October, topping out near $4,199 on the Vantage feed.
Here’s our read. The rebound started as a flow story and only later picked up support from rate pricing, and only partly: October odds fell, December odds near 89% barely moved, and an hourly chart stuck below $4,200 with neutral momentum looks consistent with a market that has priced a later hike, not no hike.3
The October hike bet faded. The December one did not, and gold has stalled just under $4,200.
That gives traders a tidy map, and a short list of dates that could redraw it.
Gold Price Chart Today: Levels in Play

If you follow gold price news or XAUUSD news through the week, the structure on the gold price chart today is a band with a stubborn ceiling. Spot gold has held above $4,000 an ounce since August, and $4,200 has turned price away often enough since 13 October to count as a regular.8

Risk Around the 28 October Fed Decision
Last week’s puzzle, hot inflation and a higher gold price, resolves in two parts: flows caught the fall within hours, and fading October hike bets explain why gold held. December still looms, and the hourly chart is behaving like a market waiting on that date. A shift in December pricing, or an hourly close outside the $4,130 to $4,200 band, would change our read.
Event weeks widen ranges, and most of last Wednesday’s 1.50% fall played out within hours of the release.1 A Stop Loss can limit losses to a planned size, but it doesn’t guarantee the fill; in fast or gapping markets, orders can execute at a worse price. Positions held through the 02:00 (GMT+8) Fed release on 29 October carry that gap risk, as our XAU/USD risk management guide explains.
Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains, and on leveraged gold CFDs a move the size of last Wednesday’s can eat a large share of margin. Position size relative to account equity decides how much of an account one move can reach. Leverage cuts both ways, every time.
RISK WARNING: CFDs are complex financial instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should ensure you fully understand the risks involved and carefully consider whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money before trading.
