Vantage Updated Fri, 2026 September 18 09:10

The XAUUSD price traded at $4,646.33 as of 06:19 (GMT+8) on 24 August 2026, per the XAUUSD TradingView setup used for this analysis, down $3.73 (0.08%) on the latest 15-minute print, which ranged between $4,645.90 and $4,654.72. Gold prices have pushed higher for the better part of a week, and today it is mostly just catching its breath. This XAUUSD technical analysis reads the chart, the Relative Strength Index (RSI), and the calendar, not what anyone thinks gold should do next. Levels below are as of the 06:19 (GMT+8) cut-off unless stated otherwise, charts are indicative and sourced from TradingView, and this is not financial advice.

The Technical Picture

This XAUUSD chart puts gold’s 50-period moving average at $4,627.80 and its 200-period moving average at $4,556.70 as of the 06:19 (GMT+8) cut-off. Price and the 50-period average both sit above the 200-period average, an established bullish structure. Zoom out and the shape is simple: a base near $4,520 to $4,550 a few days back, a steady climb, a push to $4,654.72 on the latest print, then a gentle fade to $4,646.33. Nothing dramatic, just a market catching its breath near the top of its range.

The RSI sat at 55.91 and 55.69 on the TradingView setup used, squarely neutral and well clear of the overbought readings above 70 seen earlier in the week, leaving room to extend without the chart looking stretched.

What’s Moving Gold Price Today

Behind the chart, the real story has been the US Dollar. Reuters, via Investing.com, described the dollar near multi-month lows in Asian trading on 24 August 2026, with markets unsettled ahead of Jackson Hole.1 Gold and the dollar tend to move in opposite directions, so a softer greenback has done much of the heavy lifting.

That softness has a specific origin. CNBC reported the US Treasury said on 19 August 2026 it would at least double its liquidity-support buybacks for 10 to 30-year government debt, an attempt to steady a bond market that had pushed the 30-year yield to its highest level since 2007.2 Yields and the dollar fell together, and gold caught the tailwind, hitting its highest level since June by 21 August.3

A quieter force sits underneath all of this, one that leans on gold’s role as a safe haven asset. Central banks bought close to 289 tonnes of gold in Q2 2026, a quarterly record, according to figures cited by GoldSilver.4 That will not explain a single day’s move, but it helps explain why dips this year keep finding buyers.

What to Watch This Week

The calendar carries real weight, and any of these could shake XAUUSD out of range:

  • Jackson Hole Symposium, 27 to 29 August: Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh addresses the Symposium for the first time as chair, with earlier remarks suggesting a focus on structural questions rather than near-term guidance.5
  • September rate odds: Barchart reported market-implied odds of a Fed rate hike in September near 35%, though this has moved between roughly 33% and 40% this month, so check a live reading.6
  • US growth data: the second estimate of Q2 GDP and consumer confidence releases this week feed into rate expectations ahead of the FOMC meeting on 15 to 16 September.
  • Bond market follow-through: CNBC reported gains from the Treasury’s buyback had already faded by 21 August, leaving Warsh’s speech as the next real test.7
  • Middle East developments: the Strait of Hormuz situation remains unresolved and continues to underpin periodic safe haven demand for gold.8

Given how fast this market has moved on headlines this month, position size and Stop Loss placement are worth a second look rather than assuming the range holds. A Stop Loss limits losses to a planned size; it does not guarantee an exit at a specific price when the market moves fast, and gold has already shown it can gap on a single line of news.

Trading XAUUSD as a CFD typically involves leverage of up to 1:1000, magnifying gains and losses relative to capital committed. Leverage cuts both ways, and position sizing relative to account equity is worth checking ahead of Jackson Hole and next month’s FOMC meeting.

RISK WARNING: CFDs are complex financial instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should ensure you fully understand the risks involved and carefully consider whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money before trading.
