Why the Pound Rebounded From Its 2026 Low as Fed Hike Bets Faded – GBPUSD Analysis
Key Takeaways
- GBP/USD set its 2026 low near 1.3137 on 14 October, the day US inflation rose to 3.7% against a 3.6% forecast.
- The pair reached about 1.3372 on 16 October as October Fed hike odds fell below 15%.
- As of 09:50 (GMT+8) on 20 October 2026, Vantage GBPUSD traded at 1.33157, just under its 50-period hourly moving average at 1.33181.
GBP/USD rebounded from its 2026 low of 1.3137 as October Fed hike odds faded from about 50% to below 15% and UK growth unexpectedly beat forecasts. At 09:50 (GMT+8) on 20 October 2026, Vantage GBPUSD traded at 1.33157, with UK inflation data due on Wednesday.
GBP/USD fell to 1.3137, its lowest level of 2026, on 14 October as US inflation jumped to 3.7%. 1,2 Two sessions later, the pound was back at 1.3372. The inflation number never budged by a decimal place; what the market thought it meant certainly did.
As of 09:50 (GMT+8) on 20 October 2026, Vantage GBPUSD traded at 1.33157, leaving the GBP to dollar rate about 1.36% above that low. Spot data compiled by Pound Sterling Live and Exchange Rates UK put the 2026 range at near 1.3137 to near 1.3858. 2,3
We dug into the pound to dollar rebound with one question: how much of it was really about the pound? The answer matters because this week’s UK jobs and inflation data now say more about the Bank of England’s path after November than about November itself.
Hot US Inflation Sets the 2026 Low
Wednesday’s US CPI report lit the fuse. Consumer prices rose 3.7% on the year, up from 3.4%, 4 and core inflation reached 2.6% against a 2.5% forecast. 1 The release landed at 20:30 (GMT+8), just as Asia was logging off.
Markets moved before most of us had finished reading the table. CME FedWatch odds of an October Federal Reserve (Fed) hike jumped to 50% from 22%, 5 Reuters reported the dollar at an 18-month high, 6 and GBP/USD printed its 2026 low within a few hours.
The Fed had already lifted rates to a 3.75% to 4.00% range in September, its first hike since 2023, 7,8 so an October move would have stretched the US rate advantage again. That explains the low. It does not explain the next 48 hours.
Fading Fed Bets and UK Growth Flip the Week
The dollar’s rally aged badly. ING’s Chris Turner said short-dated Treasury yields and the dollar had more than reversed their post-CPI gains within hours, as concerns over debt at AI-sector companies weighed on the greenback. After a 4%-plus monthly gain, ING judged the dollar had “probably rallied far enough for the time being”. 9
The UK added its own push on 15 October. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 0.1% in August, against a consensus for a 0.1% contraction. 10
On Friday, both central bank heads spoke in Bangkok, in Asian hours for once. Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey said there was little evidence yet of inflation becoming embedded in UK wages and prices, 11 a softer note that did not stop sterling’s climb. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh declined to pre-commit, saying “I don’t prejudge meetings”, 5 and Bloomberg reported October hike odds sliding from about 27% to below 15%. 8
The pair touched about 1.3372 before Friday’s close. 2 Two forces, then. The real question is which one did the heavy lifting.
The Dollar Did Most of the Lifting
We ran the numbers. From the 14 October extremes to the 16 October close, the spot US Dollar Index fell about 1.07%, from 102.94 to 101.84, as our US Dollar Index analysis showed. 12 GBP/USD rose about 1.46% over the same stretch, from 1.3137 to a 1.3329 close. 2 On that rough GBP vs USD split, the dollar’s own retreat matched around 70% of the pound’s rebound.
Fair warning: this is back-of-the-envelope maths. The index weights the euro at 57.6% and sterling at 11.9%, 13 and the euro had its own short-covering story that week. 12 Still, the direction is hard to miss.
The pound did earn some of its gains. Commerzbank’s Thu Lan Nguyen noted that “the economy’s resilience gives the Bank of England room to raise rates”. 14
The pound’s rebound was mostly a dollar story. Sterling’s own rate story was largely in the price before it started.
Money markets already priced around a 90% chance of a BoE hike to 4.00% on 5 November before the rebound began, and Oxford Economics’ Andrew Goodwin said a November move “looks ever more certain”. 15 By 19 October that had reached roughly 95%. 16 Confirming a hike that well telegraphed adds little. The open question is the interest rate path after November.

So where does that leave the GBPUSD chart heading into the data?
Momentum Cooled While Price Held

What caught our eye on the GBPUSD chart is how little ground the pair surrendered. As of 09:50 (GMT+8) on 20 October, the UK pound to USD rate had given back only about 24% of its rebound. At 1.33157, it sat just under the 50-period hourly moving average at 1.33181 and about 63 pips above the 200-period average at 1.32531.
Momentum had a livelier week. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the TradingView setup used for this analysis sank below 20 on 14 October and rose near 80 at Friday’s high. At the cut-off it read 51.44, above its 46.40 signal line, about as neutral as RSI gets.

UK Jobs and Inflation Test the Path
Our checklist for the next 16 days (all times GMT+8):
- UK Jobs, 20 October 2026, 14:00: The ONS publishes at 07:00 UK time. 19 Forecasts compiled by FXStreet looked for unemployment to rise to 5.0% from 4.9%, 20 though Trading Economics’ consensus had it unchanged. 21
- UK CPI, 21 October 2026, 14:00: Forecasts point to 3.4% from 3.1%, with core at 2.8%. 16 Deutsche Bank expects September to mark “its highest rate all year”. 20
- Clocks Change, 25 October 2026: UK releases shift to 15:00 (GMT+8), the only scheduled change this month nobody had to vote on.
- UK Budget and Fed Decision, 28 October 2026: Chancellor John Healey’s first Budget; 16 the Fed announces at 02:00 on 29 October. 5
- BoE Decision, 5 November 2026, 20:00: Delivered with a new Monetary Policy Report. 17
Our read holds while October Fed hike odds stay near the 15% that Charles Schwab cited from CME FedWatch on Monday, 18 and weakens if they rebuild. A UK CPI print well away from 3.4% would shift the spotlight from the dollar to the BoE.
GBP/USD Questions Traders Are Asking
What Is the GBP to USD Rate Today?
Checking GBP to USD today? As of 09:50 (GMT+8) on 20 October 2026, one pound bought about 1.33 US dollars. Converting pounds to dollars (or pounds to USD, if you think in tickers) returned the fewest dollars of 2026 on 14 October, at 1.3137. 2
Is GBP USD Going Up Today?
We don’t call direction, and at the cut-off neither did RSI, sitting near 51. GBP/USD, GBP / USD, or GBP v USD: however you type it, the first scheduled test is the 14:00 (GMT+8) UK jobs release. 19
Where Can I Find a GBPUSD Forecast?
Search for a GBP USD forecast or a GBP to USD forecast and you’ll find plenty of numbers, but Vantage does not publish one. Market pricing is the more honest guide, for short-term trading and GBP USD investing alike: below 15% odds of an October Fed hike 8 and about 95% for a November BoE hike. 16 For daily GBP USD news, follow our GBPUSD News feed.
Event Risk Around Two Rate Decisions
The inflation number that dragged GBP/USD to its 2026 low has not changed since 14 October. The odds attached to it have, and the next 16 days put both central banks’ answers on the calendar.
The 14 October session showed how quickly GBP/USD trading can move around a release: the pair covered about 138 pips from near 1.3275 to the 2026 low that day. 2 Spreads can widen and prices can gap, so a Stop Loss may fill at a worse level than set; it limits losses to a planned size but cannot guarantee that size in fast markets.
Leverage magnifies outcomes in both directions and can amplify losses as well as gains. The pair’s 1.46% two-day rebound, at 1:30 leverage, equals roughly a 44% change relative to margin committed, and the same maths applies to a 1.46% move the other way. Sizing positions as a share of account equity, rather than a fixed lot size, is one way traders frame that exposure in event-heavy weeks.
