Vantage Updated Fri, 2026 September 18 09:07

Two brutal red days, and now, a shrug. As of 20 August 2026, 05:15 (GMT+8), the Nikkei 225 traded near 65,900.50 on the Vantage Japan Index Cash CFD (JPY), down 130 points, or 0.20%. That extends a slide from 69,220.25 on Monday, its highest close in about a month and a half, to a low near 65,326 on Wednesday, a peak-to-trough decline of roughly 5.6%.[1],[2],[3] Wednesday alone saw an intraday swing of over 2,100 points as selling concentrated in semiconductor stocks.[3]

If you have been following the Nikkei index today, you know the shape of it: a chip-and-Artificial-Intelligence (AI) sell-off knocked the wind out of the rally, bond yields kept climbing, and Japan’s GDP print came in soft. This piece reads the chart as of the cut-off; it does not anticipate where the Nikkei 225 goes from here.

Nikkei 225 Steadies After A Two-Day, Chip-Led Slide

On the Vantage Japan Index Cash CFD (JPY) 15-minute chart, the index opened Tuesday near 66,750, slid to a low near 65,300 early Wednesday as chip and AI shares came under pressure, then rebounded toward 66,750 before fading back.1,3 It has since traded in a 65,900 to 66,600 range through Thursday’s Asia session, more of a pause than a reversal for Japan’s benchmark Nikkei share index.

The daily closes tell the same story with bigger numbers: 69,220.25 on Monday, down 2.54% to 67,460.73 on Tuesday, then a further 2.62% to around 65,691 on Wednesday.1,2,4 The pullback followed a rapid five-day, 5.51% run-up into Monday’s high, a pace one report described as prone to profit-taking.

AI and Chip-Linked Shares Extend the Sell-Off

Wednesday’s decline was concentrated in a narrow group of technology names. Kioxia Holdings fell around 10%, Furukawa Electric roughly 9.8%, Fujikura about 8.4%; Advantest and Tokyo Electron, two of the Nikkei stock market‘s largest chip-equipment makers, fell 4% to 5%.1 Tuesday had already hit Taiyo Yuden and Murata Manufacturing hard, down 12.19% and 9.17%.1 Nomura strategist Maki Sawada linked the pattern to the semiconductor sell-off, saying the move had “a major impact on the overall market decline,”3 while noting volatility measures had not deteriorated as sharply as the decline might suggest.

Bond Yields and A Softer GDP Print Add To The Pressure

Japan’s 10-year government bond yield has climbed to around 2.95% this week, its highest level in roughly three decades, coinciding with the pressure on chip-linked names within the Nikkei 225 index.1 Preliminary data this month also showed Japan’s economy expanding 0.3% quarter-on-quarter, an annualised 1.1%, a third straight quarter of growth that still came in below expectations.2,4 The data has coincided with speculation the Bank of Japan (BOJ) could raise its policy rate again as soon as its next meeting, a dynamic Vantage’s carry trade guide covers further.

What the Moving Averages and RSI Show

On the same 15-minute chart, the 50-period moving average sat at 66,599.28 as of the cut-off, tracking lower after capturing the earlier slide, while the 200-period moving average held near 66,116.97; both sit above the current price of 65,900.50, based on the TradingView setup used for this analysis. The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) read 42.72, signal 46.97, both below the neutral 50 line after dipping below 30 once, early in the week, then climbing above 75 during Wednesday’s rebound. Momentum, in other words, has been anything but dull.

What to Watch Next

  • BOJ Policy Meeting, September 2026: Markets are pricing a further rate move; the central bank’s statement will be the reference point, not speculation.
  • Japan Data and Chip Earnings, Late August: Trade and inflation prints, plus Kioxia, Advantest, and Tokyo Electron updates, matter ahead of the BOJ.
  • 10-Year JGB Yield: A further move toward three-decade highs would pressure growth-sensitive shares.

Managing Exposure Around this Data

Volatility around chip earnings, yield moves, and BOJ meetings can move index prices quickly either way. A Stop Loss does not prevent a loss outright, but it can limit losses to a planned size.

CFDs on indices, including the Nikkei 225, trade on a leveraged basis, up to 1:1000 with Vantage depending on the product and jurisdiction. Leverage is a double-edged tool that can magnify potential gains and losses alike. Position sizing proportional to account equity is one way traders manage this; it does not remove the underlying risk.

Keep up with the Nikkei 225

RISK WARNING: CFDs are complex financial instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should ensure you fully understand the risks involved and carefully consider whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money before trading.
