  • Price sat 22 pips above the 50-period hourly Moving Average (MA) at 1.12027 and 37 pips below the 200-period MA at 1.12616.

EUR/USD climbed to 1.12249 at 10:28 (GMT+8) on 9 October 2026, recovering more than half a cent from Thursday’s low on the same day ECB officials argued there was no rush to raise rates again.1,2 Softer hike talk usually costs a currency some support. The euro dollar rate rose straight through it.

As of 10:28 (GMT+8), the Vantage EURUSD price feed showed 1.12249, flat on the hourly candle; the 52-week range is 1.1161 to 1.2079.4

My first instinct was to credit Paris. The numbers refused to cooperate, and that gap is what this EURUSD analysis unpacks: which side of the pair actually moved, and what it changes about the risk picture into US inflation data on 14 October.

Quick Answer: Why the Euro Dollar Rate Climbed

EUR/USD climbed to 1.12249 at 10:28 (GMT+8) on 9 October 2026, 54 pips above Thursday’s 1.1171 low, even as ECB officials cooled hike bets. French-German spreads held near 141 bp, so the rebound lined up with a softer dollar rather than easing French debt stress.

EUR/USD Technical Analysis: Three Lows Held Near 1.1161

Figure 1: EURUSD H1 “Three lows between 1.1161 and 1.1172, with price back above the 50-period MA” (TradingView, https://www.tradingview.com/symbols/EURUSD/) Accessed on 9 October 2026. Data indicative, for informational purposes only.

The EURUSD chart spent the week knocking on the same floor. The pair touched near 1.1161 late on Monday morning (GMT+8), its weakest level since May 2025,7 then printed lows near 1.1166 on Wednesday evening and near 1.1172 on Thursday evening. Three lows inside 11 pips is about as tidy as this week got.

Thursday’s recovery started near 1.1172 at around 19:00 (GMT+8) and stretched to near 1.1228 by Friday’s 10:00 candle, leaving price above the 50-period MA at 1.12027 and below the 200-period MA at 1.12616, which has sloped lower all week.

Yesterday’s EURUSD news today coverage flagged an hourly close above the shorter average as the first change worth noting. The chart has now printed it, and I’ll allow myself a small nod before getting carried away.

On the TradingView setup used for this analysis, the 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) read 62.29, above its 55.58 signal line and at its highest since 6 October. I read that as momentum recovering faster than the trend, which is not the same thing as the trend turning.

Those are the EUR/USD trading signals at the cut-off: descriptions of pressure, not trade calls. They show when the euro turned, not why it turned on a day the rate story pointed the other way.

ECB Officials Cooled Hike Bets, Yet the Euro Rose

On paper, Thursday’s messaging leaned against the euro. Several policymakers, including Slovenia’s Primoz Dolenc, argued that core inflation and wages looked contained, and nearly all 73 economists in a Reuters poll expected the ECB to hold on 29 October.2 The deposit rate sits at 2.50% after September’s hike.8

Policy support has rarely been the euro’s problem this autumn. “This growth risk has been hanging over the euro,” Rabobank head of FX strategy Jane Foley said on 1 October, as the pair slid to a 17-month low.9

The US side offered little help either. Jobless claims fell to 197,000 against 200,000 expected,1 and the Federal Reserve raised rates in September and signalled more hikes.10

Yet the US Dollar Index (DXY) slipped 0.07% to 102.16 on Thursday after touching 102.46, and the euro finished up 0.08% at 1.1205; Reuters linked the dollar’s dip to a pause in the climb of euro zone bond yields.1 If rate expectations did not lift the euro, French debt relief is the next suspect.

French Spreads Held While the Dollar Eased

French bonds drove most of the euro’s slide into Monday’s low. On Wednesday, the French 10-year yield jumped 14.9 bp to 4.8959% as Spain’s snap election call added pressure, Reuters reported.5 Thursday’s relief was thin: the yield eased three basis points to 4.86%,6 and Bloomberg had the premium on French debt over German bonds hovering around 141 bp as euro area finance ministers met in Luxembourg.3

That spread works like a toll on holding French risk, and on Thursday the toll barely changed. Tuesday showed what genuine relief looks like: when French and Italian yields fell, Marc Chandler of Bannockburn Capital Markets said the move was “giving the euro a bit of a bounce.” 7 On Thursday, the bounce arrived without the yield relief.

So the rebound appears to have come from the dollar’s side. Read that way, the euro did not win an argument on Thursday; the dollar paused one. ABN Amro strategists wrote that they “expect limited further EUR/USD weakness,” arguing that a shift in rate pricing could weigh more on the dollar than on the euro.11

On Thursday, the French-German spread sat near 141 bp, about where it stood the week the euro set its low; the 54-pip rebound lined up with the dollar’s side of the pair instead.

Friday’s Asian session added the last leg, from near 1.1215 at 02:00 (GMT+8) to the cut-off, with the biggest gain in the 09:00 candle, before any European bond market opened. That leaves one practical question: what frames the read from here?

One more number sits off the hourly chart. EUR/USD closed 2 October at 1.1254,12 capping four straight weekly declines against the dollar.10 At the cut-off it sat 0.26% below that close, a level absent from every hourly chart and present in every weekly tally.

My read weakens if the French-German spread narrows from the 141 bp area and EUR/USD still slips back below the 50-period MA. It holds while the spread stays wide and the pair stays above that average.

EURUSD Questions Traders Are Asking

Is There a EURUSD Forecast Today?

Not from Vantage. Rather than a EUR/USD price forecast, this piece reports what markets are pricing and the levels traders are watching. Daily reads sit in Vantage’s currencies analysis hub.

Why Did the Euro vs USD Rate Rise on Thursday?

The euro USD rate recovered from 1.1171 as the DXY eased from 102.46,[1] while French spreads held near 141 bp.3 Vantage’s euro news coverage logs each EUR to USD driver as it lands.

Does This Change Longer-Term EURUSD Investing Views?

Longer horizons run on the same inputs: rate differentials and the risk premium on French debt. The euro to USD rate’s 52-week range of 1.1161 to 1.20794 shows how far it has travelled while they shifted. Vantage’s guide to trading EUR/USD covers those drivers in depth.

Weekend Gap Risk for EURUSD Traders

The week closes where Thursday’s contradiction began: ECB officials cooled hike talk and the euro dollar rate still rose, as the dollar stepped back while French spreads stood still. Whether that read survives is a question for the spread and for US CPI on 14 October.

This week’s lowest print arrived in Monday’s Asian session amid French fiscal worries,7 before European bond markets opened, which is the kind of gap risk an open position carries over a Saturday and Sunday. A Stop Loss order sets in advance the price at which a position closes and limits losses to a planned size in normal conditions; in a fast or gapping market, the fill can be worse than the level set.

Leverage magnifies both gains and losses on an account balance. Vantage offers leverage of up to 1:1000 on eligible accounts for forex trading; at that ratio, a move the size of Thursday’s 54-pip recovery, about 0.48%, changes a position’s value by roughly 4.8 times the margin used, in either direction. Sizing positions as a percentage of account equity is one way traders keep a move of that size proportional to the account.
