Vantage Updated Fri, 2026 October 2 08:52

As of 01:46 (UTC) / 09:46 (GMT+8) on 25 September 2026, the Vantage Japan Index Cash Contract for Difference (CFD) traded at 66,333.56, its current hourly candle up 589 points (0.90%). It was Tokyo’s second session after Silver Week, with the 10-year Japanese Government Bond (JGB) yield near its highest since 1996.

So why is the Nikkei index today holding up? Banks firmed with yields, and the CFD had already sold off hard. Prices as of the cut-off; news from Friday’s Asian session. Not financial advice.

The Nikkei 225 climbed back above 66,000 on 25 September 2026 while Japan’s 10-year bond yield sat near a 1996 high. Bank and chip shares led, a weaker yen supported exporters, and the CFD had recovered about half of its 2,000-point slide from 23 September.

What Moved the Nikkei Stock Market

Tokyo reopened on 24 September 2026 into a global bond sell-off. “Every major bond market’s feeling the heat at once,” said Nigel Green of deVere Group.8 UOB cited “rebounding oil prices, stronger-than-expected US PMI data” and a weak 5-year Treasury auction (see Bond Market News).3

Here’s the twist: on Friday morning the Nikkei 225 rose 1.3%, back above 66,000, as Hong Kong and Australia fell; Investing.com noted a weaker yen (see USDJPY News) supporting exporters.4 Chip and bank shares led, with Mitsubishi UFJ up 2% and Sumitomo Mitsui up 2.5%.5 Higher yields coincided with firmer banks, so the rout hit the Nikkei share index unevenly.

The BOJ raised rates to 1.25% on 18 September, two days after the Fed’s first hike in more than three years.6,7 Futures priced a 70% chance of another Fed hike in October,4 with Bank of America’s rates team calling US data “still fairly solid” (see Interest Rate News).10

Brent settled up 3.41% at USD106.60 on 24 September 2026, off a USD108 high, after Reuters reported US-Iran talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz.8 See Oil Price News Today.

What the Nikkei 225 Index Chart Is Showing

Call it a holiday rollercoaster. From near 63,800 on 17 September 2026, the CFD climbed through the 1H 50-period moving average (MA) to peak near 67,330 at the turn of 22 to 23 September (UTC). The Relative Strength Index (RSI) in the TradingView setup used for this analysis had topped 80 a day earlier.

Most of the slide came while Tokyo was shut: the CFD fell to about 65,890 on 23 September, then to a low near 65,310 after the 24 September cash close, a 3.0% drop that stopped above the rising 1H 200-period MA. The cash index still gained 0.76% that day, catching up from its 18 September close.

At the cut-off, price traded at 66,333.56 after a 66,388.56 high, back above a still-falling 1H 50-period MA at 66,172.35, with RSI at 61.34. Our Nikkei 225 trading guide and indices trading guide cover the basics.

The CFD fell about 2,000 points on 23 and 24 September 2026. Moves that size can gap through planned exits. A Stop Loss can help limit a single loss but does not guarantee the fill; Nikkei, yen, and US index exposure is worth checking as one position.

Leverage is a double-edged tool: Nikkei 225 CFDs are leveraged, so losses are magnified as well as gains, and position sizing is worth revisiting.

RISK WARNING: CFDs are complex financial instruments and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should ensure you fully understand the risks involved and carefully consider whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money before trading.
