Why USD/JPY Clawed Back Ground as the US-Japan Rate Gap Stayed Wide – USDJPY CFD Analysis
USD/JPY recovered to 157.79 at 09:43 (GMT+8) on 28 September 2026, after a slide from its 159.03 peak deepened when Tokyo disclosed Trump’s yen concerns. The US-Japan policy gap of up to 2.75 percentage points stayed intact, leaving the pair between its two hourly averages.
Type USDJPY, USD/JPY, or USD / JPY into a search bar this Monday and you land on a pair far calmer than Friday’s version. The Vantage USDJPY CFD printed 157.79 on the hourly chart at 09:43 (GMT+8) / 01:43 (UTC) on 28 September 2026. All prices are as of that cut-off unless dated otherwise.
Whether you searched USDJPY news today, USD/JPY news today, or USD JPY news today, last week’s lesson was simple: a press briefing hit harder than any data print. This USDJPY forecast reads the chart and the week ahead without calling direction; our guide to trading USD/JPY covers the basics.
Tokyo Went Public, and the Yen Listened
Most of last week’s USD/JPY news belonged to the dollar. The pair opened at 156.98, dipped to 156.59 on 21 September during Japan’s holiday, then climbed to 159.03 on 24 September. 1
Then Friday arrived. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama revealed that Trump had voiced concern about yen weakness in talks with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. 2
The yen, the market’s go-to safe-haven asset, finished about 1% firmer, snapping a five-session losing streak. 3 OCBC strategist Moh Siong Sim was blunt: “Intervention risk should put a ceiling on further yen weakness.” 4
The detail most USD JPY news skips: the response came a day after the pair topped out at 159.03, a full yen short of the widely watched 160.
The Rate Gap Still Does the Heavy Lifting
Friday did not rewrite the maths. The Federal Reserve (Fed) lifted its range to 3.75% to 4.00% on 16 September, its first hike since 2023. 5 J.P. Morgan Wealth Management’s Phil Camporeale said, “We forecast another 25bps rate hike by the end of the year.” 6
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) moved too, reaching 1.25% on 18 September, its highest since 1995. 7 Yet SMBC’s Hirofumi Suzuki said the split vote “conveyed a dovish impression.” 8
| Measure | Fed | BoJ |
| Policy Rate | 3.75% to 4.00% | 1.25% |
| Latest Move | +25bp on 16 September 5 | +25bp on 18 September 7 |
| Vote | 12-0 6 | 7-2 7 |

That gap keeps the carry trade in play, and US 10-year yields have held above 5.00%, a move BBH linked to higher real yields. 9 On Monday, the yen weakened towards 158 per dollar alongside a firmer greenback. 3 Interest rate news, not headlines alone, still anchors any USD JPY forecast.

On the hourly USDJPY chart, the 24 September high did not extend. Price slid through the faster moving average (158.14 at 09:43 GMT+8, now curling lower) and paused near 156.95 on 25 September, beside the slower, still-rising average at 157.11. It has held above that line since.
The 14-period RSI on the TradingView setup used for this analysis dipped below 30 on Friday, then recovered to 51.76 by the cut-off: neutral territory.

Friday’s 1% swing followed a press briefing, not a data release. A Stop Loss placed with 159.03 and 156.95 in mind carries extra weight here, and exposure across yen crosses is worth checking, as they often move together on intervention headlines.
Leverage cuts both ways, magnifying returns and losses alike; on a pair that moved around 1% in one session, the hit to an account balance can be quick. Position sizing deserves a second look before payrolls on 2 October.
