Why the Yen Slid to a Three-Week Low as Fed Hike Odds Hit 70% – USDJPY CFD Analysis
- The Vantage USDJPY CFD traded at 158.68 at 01:47 (UTC) / 09:47 (GMT+8) on 25 September 2026, after a three-week high near 159.00.1
- CME FedWatch priced a near 70% chance of an October US Federal Reserve (Fed) hike, up from 50% a week earlier.2
- The Bank of Japan (BoJ) lifted rates to 1.25% on 18 September, yet the yen kept weakening.3
Here’s the twist in USDJPY news today: Japan hiked, and the yen still slid. Both central banks tightened; only one seems to be steering the pair.
This isn’t a USD JPY forecast, just a read of what USD/JPY did and why. Prices are as of 01:47 (UTC) / 09:47 (GMT+8) on 25 September 2026, with chart times in UTC.
USD/JPY News Today in 45 Words
USD/JPY touched a three-week high near 159.00 on 24 September as CME FedWatch priced a nearly 70% chance of an October Fed hike. The Bank of Japan’s 1.25% rate sits far below the Fed’s 3.75% to 4.00% range, and markets appear focused on that gap.
| Factor | US Federal Reserve | Bank of Japan |
| Policy Rate | 3.75% to 4.00% | 1.25% |
| Latest Move | September hike, first since July 2023 | 18 September hike, 31-year high |
| Market Read | Near 70% odds of an October hike | Two dissents, seen as less hawkish |

Hot US Data and 5% Yields Put the Dollar Back in Charge
The US dollar held near a two-month high on 24 September, with the dollar index at 101.1. Hot US Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) data and a weak auction lifted five-year Treasury yields above 5%, a first since 2007.2
Fed Governor Michael Barr then flagged further hikes.4 Pepperstone’s Chris Weston said “the US dollar continues to stand firm in its attraction to own.” 2
A 31-Year High at the Bank of Japan Has Not Closed the Gap
The BoJ’s hike drew two dissents and read as less hawkish than hoped.2 Hours later, the Nikkei reported a BoJ rate check, a common precursor to intervention.5 The Vantage USDJPY CFD then fell from near 158.05 to around 156.55.
MUFG called it “a clear signal that they are prepared to intervene again.” 6 Yet ING’s Francesco Pesole noted “the Fed has sounded distinctly more hawkish than the Bank of Japan this month.” 7
That’s the crux: markets appear to price the US side of the rate gap far more heavily. Our central bank policies explainer and USD/JPY trading guide unpack why.
USDJPY Chart: Higher Lows as Momentum Cools
No chart is a USDJPY forecast, but this USDJPY chart shows structure. At 01:47 (UTC), price sat about 35 pips below the 24 September high after drifting lower in Asia on reports of a phased US-Iran Strait of Hormuz arrangement.1
Each dip since 18 September has held above the last: 156.55 on 18 and 21 September, 156.80 on 22 September, and 157.80 on 24 September. Price sits above the rising 1H 50-period Moving Average (MA) at 158.29 and 1H 200-period MA at 156.76.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) from the TradingView setup used for this analysis read 53.80, under its 61.51 signal line, after topping 70 on 18 and 23 September. Price is holding up; momentum appears to have faded.

On the radar (see Forex News Today):
- Intervention Risk, Ongoing: The last coordinated US-Japan intervention came on 31 July, after USDJPY hit 163.73.8
- US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE), 30 September: August data, 12:30 (UTC) / 20:30 (GMT+8).9
- Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), October 2026: Hike odds near 70% as of 24 September.2
Intervention headlines move this pair fast; on 18 September it fell more than a yen within hours. A Stop Loss limits losses to a planned size but does not prevent them, and price can gap through orders in thin markets.
Leverage works both ways, magnifying losses as well as gains, so small moves can hit an account balance quickly. Position sizing is worth revisiting before PCE. More USD JPY news today sits on our Forex News and Currency Trading News pages, with USDJPY CFD details under forex trading.
